"Last fall, three young men of Palestinian descent were shot while out for a walk. All three survived, but one, Hisham Awartani, suffered a spinal cord injury and is now paralyzed from the waist down. His mother, Elizabeth Price, shares an update on his health and explains the accessibility modifications their family has made to their Burlington home." So begins a Vermont Public story on Vermont Edition in September. The team at Vermont manufacturer and designer WheelPad L3C feels thankful and honored to have been a part of Hisham's accessibility journey as he adapts to life after a spinal cord injury.
Being able to support a community member in need at home here in Vermont to get a quickly installed, accessible living space so that Hisham can live in the comfort of his own private space with his family while he recovers has been inspiring.
". . . it's transformational because houses in Vermont are not built for accessibility and are very difficult to adapt. So it was very transformational without it being something that is destructive or so complicated." - Elizabeth Price (Hisham's Mother)
The WheelPad team is delighted to hear how Hisham has been recovering since last fall and eagerly look forward to following his journey as he continues to thrive after adversity.
